TWI (Training Within Industry) was developed in American industry, when millions should be trained fast and effectively to take over jobs from workers enrolled in WW II. After the war TWI was forgotten again; but Toyota introduced TWI from 1951, and is still practicing it every day as a key element in their culture of developing "Creative Thinking People" to sustain and further develop improvements.
TWI originally included three elements: JR - Job Relations (How to develop leadership with respect and involvement); JI - Job Instruction (How to develop a well trained workforce); JM - Job Methods (How to involve all employees in improving processes). Two more modules have been added later: JS - Job Safety (How to develop a safe and practical work place); and PS - Problem Solving (How to uncover and solve problems)
16 years ago TWI was (re)discovered as "The Hidden Secret of Toyota". TWI is also called "The Human Side of Lean". Today TWI is implemented in industry, health care, service, finance, administration, supermarkets, and IT - to improve predictability, safety, quality and stability.

“LEGO has been a household name all of my life and I was aware that they had a strong people-focused culture and adopted lean methods. I was not aware how far LEGO has come in moving from the tools to investing in developing people and becoming a learning organization. This book, written with LEGO insiders, is a stunning example of the discipline and commitment needed to develop people as masters of their crafts through the only way people learn—repetitive, deliberate practice." Jeffery K. Liker, Professor, University of Michigan
